Cycling on the Fleurieu Peninsula

The Fleurieu Peninsula is a favourite for cyclists because of its ease of access, its gentle terrain, the spectacular and diverse scenery, its dedicated bike paths, regular settlement and service centres and its opportunities for discovery and relaxation.

Detailed maps covering some of the Fleurieu Peninsula rides can be acquired from Bike South Ph: 8343 2911.

Riding along the Encounter Coast Bikeway on the Fleurieu Peninsula

Strathalbyn and Hills

From Strathalbyn, a four hour, 38km ride takes the rider into the hills, with its farms, creeks, scrublands and vistas. Take the Ashbourne Road, climbing over several kilometres to the lookout on Gemmill Hill. Enjoy views across the plains to Lake Alexandrina and to the sand dunes of the Coorong National Park. Continue along the gum-lined road to Ashbourne. Roadside fresh fruit is available. Turn toward Meadows, following the Bull Creek as it winds its way steadily uphill through the valley. Near the crest, turn sharply right towards Paris Creek. A string of beautiful dams, farms, ruins, dry stone walls and views of distant plains and lakes present as the road descends, almost continuously over the last 15 kilometres into Strathalbyn.

Linear Park

Linear Park is a flat, bitumen path running from Willunga to McLaren Vale. It is used by cyclists, walkers and horse riders and follows what was the old railway line allowing visitors to take in the sights of the Willunga hills and plains. The trail then joins on from McLaren Vale through Pedler Creek and Noarlunga onto the Southern Expressway bike path which ends at Flagstaff Hill.

Hindmarsh Island

Cross the Hindmarsh Island bridge from Goolwa for this 25km ride. Take the road along the north side of the Island to Narnu Bay. The road climbs to rejoin the main road, at the spot where Captain Sturt first sighted the Murray River’s mouth in 1830. There is a monument. Turn left along Randell Road and follow the signs to the River's mouth. Farmlands and wetlands host many waterfowl, in particular Cape Barren geese. Stand for a moment at the point where Australia’s greatest river system ends. Retrace your path back to Goolwa.

The Encounter Bikeway

A fun, family ride connecting Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. The sealed path is suitable for escorted toddlers on trikes through to those wanting a gentle, seaside cycle.

food and wine

It can be accessed from many beachside car parks and totals 15 kilometres or so, one way. In winter, whales can be seen to advantage from low cliffs at Middleton and Port Elliot. The path is shared with walkers, roller-bladers, skaters and people in wheelchairs.

Why not cycle one way along the coast and return on the Cockle Train. With facilities for transporting bicycles, the train operates on Sundays and school holidays. For a copy of the Encounter Bikeway trail visit one of the Visitor information Centres in the region.

Wineries and Beaches

A 52 kilometre ride begins at Noarlunga, crosses the Onkaparinga River and follows the coastal road along spectacular cliffs. At Moana, turn inland at Commercial Road to Maslin (famed as Australia’s first nude) Beach. Continue to follow the coast, via Blanche Point to Port Willunga and Silver Sands beach. Turn inland to Willunga, riding between fields of vines and almonds. Pick up the sealed bike path running between Willunga and McLaren Vale. Numerous wineries, restaurants and cafes offer refreshments. Galleries and studios reflect the creative spirit of the district. Leaving McLaren Vale, detour into Old Noarlunga, one of the oldest settlements in the area. From here, follow River Road along the northern side of the Onkaparinga River back to Noarlunga Centre.

Bike Hire
